Top Ten Rarest and most Valuable PAL PlayStation 2 Games

Its' back, bigger and better, the top ten list! Starting off with a revised version of one of our most popular (and controversial!) lists, the top ten rarest PS2 games of the PAL region.

The PlayStation 2 had one of its last known releases last year with Pro Evolution 14, a month before the PlayStation 4 was unveiled, making it the biggest selling console in history.

But even with all those sales there's still games which are hard to find, here in what hopefully will become a series of top tens we take a look at ten of the rarest PAL PlayStation 2 games released.

With it being only recently discontinued there's sure to be some changes to the top ten as other, more obscure games are revealed. Until then enjoy and debate the top ten below, and please put forward a case if you feel some games are missing.

The number one rule though - if you're going to suggest a game be removed you'll need to have an argument for a game to replace it :-) Enjoy and tell us if you have any on the list!

Thanks to Shlimpole for the Phoenix videos, striaght out of his personal collection!

Number 10

Rule of Rose

Publisher 505 Gamestreet

Although often described as banned and the rarest game of all time on eBay. Rule of Rose was actually never banned and was released in parts of Europe in November 2006. The UK government debated the horror in the game with its use of children, 505 felt the pressure and withdrew it from release. Although easily not the rarest game on the list it's certainly been hyped up as ultra rare and the price for the last UK version sold on eBay was north of 1000 euros.

Number 9

Games Galaxy 2

Publisher Phoenix Games

The first of a number of Phoenix games. Phoenix publishers were a budget video games company that released cheap PlayStation 2 games in some parts of Europe. Some of the print runs for the games were at the limit of an accepted run and as such have gone onto form some of the rarest PS2 games. Don't get too excited though if you find the phoenix logo, many of the releases are common, but some like Games Galaxy 2 can be hard to find!

Number 8

Mambo

Publisher Phoenix

Mambo took me ages to find until a member on here (thanks Frits!) sorted me out with a UK copy. Checking the internet now there, like others on the list, there is not one available to buy.

Number 7

World Quiz

Publisher Candella Software

At the end of 2009 the PlayStation 2 was just starting to pick up players in the PAL Indian region. Candella released World Quiz, one of 12 Indian exclusives. With the issues surrounding payment to Indian stores (the Indian government prevent the use of PayPal) it's a hard one to add to the collection.

Number 6

Sengoku Anthology

Publisher Phoenix

A SNK PlayMore game only released in select European countries Sengoku can be a tough one to get hold off not only because there's not many of them out there, but also collectors and Beat 'em Up fans are more likely to hold on to them. A compilation of Neo Geo games, the last one I've seen was sold from Belgium.

Number 5

Buccaneer

Essential Games

One of only 17 games released in parts of Europe by Essential Games. These again like Phoenix were budget titles, slightly improved though by being releases of Japanese budget games converted to English. Again small print runs and a slightly more interesting sub set to go for make this fairly expensive to pick up, especially the UK version. Make sure not to confuse it with the common Black Buccaneer!

Number 4

Zombie Hunters 2

Essential Games

This game took me a while to find, eventually a UK copy turned up on Amazon. Another Japanese budget release and one of the 17 Essential Game collection. Also interestingly one of five PlayStation 2 releases with the word Zombie at the start of its title. Now even more desirable as collectors go for complete horror subsets.

Number 3

Airborne Troops

Playlogic

Not quite so sure what made this game so rare, possibly another budget title with a low print run, there's often no copies for sale online and it took me ages to find a full English copy. The game isn't even on playlogics releases –http://uk.ign.com/companies/playl.... There were some more Playlogic games supposedly never released such as Project Delta too so keep an eye out for that!

Number 2

Ocean Commander

Publisher Phoenix

As far as I know only a handful of the UK Ocean Commanders have been found so far. With this being a shmup this only adds to the value, Copies normally go for 50 – 100 Euros for the Italian Edition. Again a low print run from Phoenix makes this hard to find. As with many of the phoenix titles there may be boxes waiting to be found in some abandoned warehouse which will push prices down, what really intrigues me is how they could of produced so little English copies.

Number 1

Saint and Sinner

Publisher Phoneix

Great name and action packed front cover for what's actually puzzle game. Again another small print run of a Phoenix game, hard to find, near unsearchable which is a shame as it looks great fun to play. What makes this harder to find is that it looks like it was an Italian exclusive, to my knowledge no other versions exist (please let us know if you have another version!). I can't find any video footage online of Saint and Sinner to show you, the same with World Quiz 2009.

There's also rumours of other, rarer games, that maybe released but haven't been found yet, such as Pinball Wizard our very own Shlimpole is investigating, or others that were slated for release but never appeared.

So that's my top ten so far, let me know if you don't agree or spot any mistakes!
